CAPA On-line Judges Technical Viewing Requirements

The following are the minimum technical viewing standards established by CAPA for on-line judging:

  • Minimum monitor display size is 17”.
  1. High Gamut monitor capable of displaying 100% sRGB colour space or better.
  2. Minimum resolution of 1024×768 or the local club’s stated resolution for local club competitions. For CAPA Zone and National competitions the minimum resolution is 1400×1050.
  3. Viewing distance should be a distance greater than twice the diagonal size of the Screen Image Size – not Screen size, but Image size (i.e., diagonal image size on screen is 10” then your viewing distance should be no less than 20” from monitor). Avoid ‘leaning in’ for some images and not others.
  4. Monitor must have been calibrated within 1 week (or less) using a quality calibration device.
  5. Lighting in the viewing room should be as dark as when one did the screen calibration; or as would be in a projected environment.
  6. Refrain from zooming into images; as one would not be able to do if in a projected competition.
  7. Try to evaluate each category of the competition at one sitting whenever possible.
  8. Give yourself time for your eyes to adjust when going from a bright image to a dark image, and vice versa.
  9. Check the competition requirements as to Colour Space and Resolution for submitted images and make sure you are working in the same environment. You need to correctly see what the photographer has submitted for evaluation.NOTE: If you do not have the equipment to properly view images in a calibrated 100% sRGB environment, please do not accept on-line judging assignments in fairness to the image makers.
